5 company benefits that are actually attractive

Hello hiring machines!

Welcome back to the SportsGrad Talent Newsletter, your bite-sized guide to attract and retain elite operators.

Every fortnight, we share insights from our community to help you hire better candidates who stick around for longer.

This week the SportsGrad Community told us about:

The things that stood out right away for me were obviously flexible working. Candidates don’t want to be forced into 5 days in the office anymore and having a hybrid of office and WFH is important. This was in line with a ‘well-being’ focus. People want to have a solid work life balance, access to gyms and mental health leave. Some other notable benefits people want are employee assistance programs, leave incentives and providing time for people to use the gym or exercise.

1. Flexible working conditions

31yo, working Full-Time: “Hybrid working. I'd never take a role which required 5 days a week in the office. Those days are dead”

25yo, working Full-Time: “I’ve found that the highs are so crazy the lead up and during events, that sometimes you don’t want to take leave to refresh afterwards. Working from home for a week provides that safe and comfortable environment to still be productive post event”

23yo, working Full-Time: “Flexibility of working location/times is a big thing for me. Eg. If the work can be done onsite in an office - to me, it can also be done at home and it also shows that the company trusts the work to be done”

2. Health Benefits

30yo, working Full-Time: “Gym. Having access to a gym at a cheaper rate is always a great benefit”

37yo, working Full-Time: One benefit I had previously that I miss so much is heavily company subsidised health insurance!”

3. Extra Leave or option to purchase leave

37yo, Working Full-Time:What I would look for now is: super rate, WFH flex, extra AL days (bday leave, Xmas leave), even the option to purchase extra AL”

31yo, Working Full-Time:Wellness / Mental Health days / Extra Annual leave days - If included it means a company is walking the walk, not just giving cupcakes on RUOK day. I also have a friend who works for a company who offers 6 months leave after 5 years on 60% salary. Pretty awesome if you can make it work financially”

4. Tickets to matches

39yo, Working Full-Time: “Complimentary membership/tickets, phone allowance, volunteer leave/additional leave days for birthdays as well”

31yo Working Full-Time in Agency: “Some inclusions I love at my current employer are free tickets to sports & events - last year I was able to go to quite a few AFL games, cricket & watch the Matildas at the world cup, attend conferences.”

5. Personal Development opportunities

25yo, working Part-Time: “Development opportunities are key for me. I always want to know that the company are happy to invest in their staff”

29yo, working Part-Time: “Personal development. Whether this be group company training or work paying for further educational courses for its staff

24yo - just landed first Full-Time Role: “Leadership Development Programs are big for me. Personally I’d prefer being included in the “Adaptive Leaders Program” having been on the receiving end of a “Passport to Work” program. I’d like to be able to help grads out with the same mentoring I received through my mentors”

🧐 FOOD FOR THOUGHT🧐

31yo from agency land: “Incentives to stay at the company such as if you’re are at the company for 2 years you get 5 weeks of AL instead of 4 are pretty enticing”

39yo, working Full-Time: “Having the office as a collaboration tool rather compulsory location - dependent of course the role and if FTE/PT/casual”

28yo, working Full-Time:What I look for now: flexible work location, volunteer leave, leave flexibility and inclusive policies

🔥 HOT TAKE 🔥

30yo, Working Full-Time: “Discounts at selected stores or coffee shops - yeah sure great I guess, but honestly, you don't need this and you'll use it once. Not important unless the benefit offers true value such as a significant discount like 40% off a brand, 10% off a store doesn't do much for me when considering a role. I also don't like organisations claiming that benefits like "company fun days, company training, after work dinner and/or drink parties, internal company trivia etc" like they are key and unique”

So as you can see, flex work is the way of the future and if you aren’t offering much in the way of personal development, it might be worth considering it! Well-being policies and benefits are sought after, as well as at-match experiences that get staff involved in the overall culture of the business. If you’re relying on small discounts to stores, they may not have the impact you’re after.
